Chapter Twelve

Eli was out on the balcony, sitting in the dark, watching the guards patrol the grounds around the pink fortress. They hadn’t varied their routine since day one, complacent, that boded well. Nevertheless, she watched, it was why they were here after all.

She’d changed into a pair of white pyjama shorts and a matching v-neck t-shirt when she returned to the room. Aiming for comfort, rather than style.

Absently she wiped her sweaty brow. The humidity smothering her like a too hot blanket whilst the strange still air, after non-stop days of gusty breezes, felt mildly unsettling.

Not as unsettling as the conversation she’d had with Rafe earlier in the bar though. The man was insane. Prattling on about an impossible future. How did he even know they were right for one another?

Admittedly her experience with men was limited to a series of never ending first dates and one night stands but Rafe’s insistence that there was something long term worth fighting for between them, it baffled and vaguely disturbed her.

She liked Rafe. He was gorgeous, funny, intelligent and quick-witted. Certainly she found him attractive. And yes, ever since they’d met five years ago she’d had a mild crush on the man. But none of that translated to a future together, did it? It was just wishful thinking on Rafe’s part, wasn’t it? She didn’t dare fan that flame of hope that dwelled deep within her. That way lay madness, disappointment and devastation.

No, she needed to stand firm.

Damn, and it looked like sex was off the table. She shifted slightly, trying to quell the ache that had built up low in her body. The offer had just spilled out of her. A brief fling, a memory to treasure and maybe if she was lucky the act would quench the burning throb of desire that gripped her every time Rafe smiled, laughed… breathed. Goddess help her.

Grrr, it wasn’t just this situation with Rafe getting to her, why was it so still? She glanced out at the strangely glassy ink black ocean, shards of light refracting across its surface from the millions of stars alight in the heavens. It was so filthy humid tonight. The air felt soupy, almost as if she could trail her fingers back and forth and separate it. Breathing required a small effort, the air too laden with moisture.

They’d had several torrential rain storms sweep across the island during their stay. Absently Eli searched the horizon, no looming cloudbanks. The sparkling bejewelled heavens were clear in every direction.

Activity on the pink mansion roof caught her attention. Using her high powered binoculars, she focused in. Watching as a man crouched next to the state of the art weather station installed on the roof. It was hard to tell given the distance but he appeared to be frowning, looking down at something and then searching the skies, just like Eli had been doing.

Hmm, Eli tapped on her special black light powered phone, designed so it would cast no light. Hurriedly she pulled up the weather warnings for the Philippines, hmmm, nothing.
